PAOAY, Ilocos Norte, May 18 (PIA) – Ilocanos are not just known for their richness in culture and arts, but also of legendary history that are passed on from generation to generation.

In Ilocos Norte, iconic tales of the province’s origin are relived through the celebration of “Himala sa Buhangin.”

The Himala sa Buhangin is an annual music and arts festival in the Paoay Sand Dunes, initiated by the provincial government as part of its La Milagrosa Provincial Fiesta. It is known for its grand tribute to classic films such as “Ang Panday (1980).” “Himala (1981),” and “Temptation Island (1980, 2011).” Historic statutes are built in honor of the films that were shot in the renowned Paoay Sand Dunes.

On its fifth instalment this year, a re-tell of the legend of Paoay Lake, one of the famous folklores, was the main highlight of the celebration. This tells the story of a once humbled town that grew greedy and later on submerged into lake as punishment.

“The legend of Paoay Lake tells us something about talent and skill. This serves as an encouragement for more artists to express their God-given gifts to the community,” Ianree Raquel, head of Ilocos Norte Tourism Office, shared as he explained the reason behind the theme of this year’s fete.

Aside from promoting the rich heritage of the province, local artists and performers showcased their talents thus, giving them an avenue to uphold wealth in arts and music.

Art installations were put up featuring masterworks of young artists and students. Enthusiasts expressed appreciation on the Ilocano artistry.

Ending the night with a blast was a performance of classic singer of the now-defunct band Eraserheads, Ely Buendia. Over a hundred music aficionados jammed until the wee hours of the morning.

Indeed, heritage is a mark of Ilocanos. There is always a story of origin that even the millennial generation can tell. (JNPD/MJTAB/PIA1, Ilocos Norte)
