5th Himala sa Buhangin: A celebration of music, arts, history

PAOAY, Ilocos Norte, May 18 (PIA) – Ilocanos are not just known for their richness in culture and arts, but also of legendary history that are passed on from generation to generation.

In Ilocos Norte, iconic tales of the province’s origin are relived through the celebration of “Himala sa Buhangin.”

The Himala sa Buhangin is an annual music and arts festival in the Paoay Sand Dunes, initiated by the provincial government as part of its La Milagrosa Provincial Fiesta. It is known for its grand tribute to classic films such as “Ang Panday (1980).” “Himala (1981),” and “Temptation Island (1980, 2011).” Historic statutes are built in honor of the films that were shot in the renowned Paoay Sand Dunes.

NAST-DOST holds Luzon Regional scientific meeting

BAGUIO CITY, May 17(PIA) – – The National Academy of Science and Technology, in coordination with the Department of Science and Technology just completed at CAP John Hay Convention Center here the Luzon Regional Scientific Meeting, a pre-activity for the 39th Annual Scientific Meeting set in Manila this July.

The NAST – led Regional Scientific Meetinge had the theme, “Attaining Sustainable Development Goals: Philippine Fisheries and Other Aquatic Resources 20/20”, to focus on water or marine and coastal resources in bringing in inclusive growth to Filipino people and sustainable development to the country.

Nueva Vizcaya opens museum, library

BAYOMBONG, Nueva Vizcaya, May 10 (PIA) – Provincial officials here led by Governor Carlos Padilla recently opened the Provincial Museum and Library (PML) in this town.

The PML has been declared recently by the National Museum as one of the Important Cultural Properties (ICP) in the country.

The building has been repaired and developed through the initiative of former Governor Ruth Padilla who allocated funds for its improvement and facilitated its declaration as ICP.

Mindanaoan clothing designs showcased in country’s ecotourism pageant

PAGUDPUD, Ilocos Norte, May 17 (PIA) -The unique Mindanaoan tapestry was showcased during the search for Mr. and Miss Hannah’s Ecotourism Philippines 2017 at the Hannah’s Beach Resort and Convention Center in Barangay Balaoi, Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte on Saturday.

This developed as the 12 pairs of beautiful ladies and handsome gentlemen, who were the finalist to the pageant, worn these Mindanaoan clothing designs during their casual wear and formal gown attire.

DA rolls out plan to encourage backyard chicken raising nationwide

CITY OF TABUK, Kalinga, May 15 – – Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel F. Piñol is seeking to revive the traditional raising of chickens in the farms through a Nationwide Backyard Chicken Raising (NBCR) Program.

Piñol announced during a farmers’ forum last May 10 here that the Department of Agriculture would encourage Filipinos to raise their own food to lessen the country’s dependence on imported food.

“It is ironic that even upland people need to go to the city to buy eggs, when they can raise their own chickens,” Piñol said.

‘End Hunger Summit’ to fight poverty, malnutrition

TRO vs error-ridden Ilokano books sought

BATAC, Ilocos Norte, May 16 — The coordinator of the Ilokano Language Program of the University of Hawaii (UH) is assailing the publication of some Ilokano books that are allegedly replete with errors in grammar and language orthography and urged the Department of Education (DepEd) to stop its distribution, sale, and use for DepEd’s Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE) program.

Dr. Aurelio S. Agcaoili, a veteran Ilokano writer and author of Ilokano and English books, said Region 1 DepEd Director Alma Ruby Torio should seek the issuance of a temporary restraining order (TRO) to stop those who bought the materials from using them in classrooms and save the pupils in Grades 1, 2, and 3 from learning faulty Ilokano syntax and grammar.

Ilocos Region ranks 5th in terms of GRDP in 2016


SAN FERNANDO CITY, May 15 (PIA) – Ilocos Region posted a 3 percent increase in Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) from 5.4 percent in 2015 to 8.4 percent in 2016, making the region the fifth fastest growing economy nationwide.

This was reported by Director Socrates Ramores of the Philippine Statistics Authority-Region 1 during the simultaneous news conference in all 17 regions recently.

“Our region’s economy in 2016 was above the national target of 6.9 percent economic growth,” Ramores said.
